English as an Additional Language (EAL)
English as an additional language (EAL)
We believe that an additional language is a valuable asset to your child’s education. We recognise this as a strength and want to celebrate the rich diversity.
We have speech and language groups running weekly to support children whom have English as an additional language. Teachers refer these children and then they are put into groups to ensure support is pitched appropriately.
For EAL learners, as with other groups of learners, our teachers adapt their lessons to make sure that all learners can get the most out of these lessons.
Teaching principles of EAL teaching at Springfield:
- More visuals in the form of pictures, photographs to help make sense of new information.
- Interactive and collaborative teaching and learning styles and activities.
- Drama and role-play to make learning memorable (we follow a talk for writing programme).
- Partner/small group work.
-
Language development through key phrases rather than key words.
